Keep Your Energy Bill Low While Temperatures Are High

Did you know? Hot, sunny days are a hallmark of a Sacramento summer, and July 2024 marked record high temperatures for the region. As temperatures soar, so does energy usage in most households.

The annual Spare The Air campaign occurs from May through October and focuses on reducing gas emissions, the main contributor to ground-level ozone air pollution (smog). Electric vehicles and appliances produce fewer emissions than their gas-powered counterparts, and are a good choice for helping to reduce emissions.

Here are a few ideas to conserve energy while staying cool:

  • Turn off and Unplug – Once you’ve finished using an appliance, turn it off to reduce further heat input and lower electricity usage. Many appliances continue to consume electricity even when they aren’t actively in use, so take the extra step and unplug them if possible.
  • Cover Windows – Blinds, curtains, and other window coverings can help keep the sun at bay and prevent temperatures from rising in your home. There are a lot of options, meaning you can customize them for your personal needs and style.
  • Reduce Indoor Cooking – Ovens, stovetops, and other cooking appliances all produce heat. Move your cooking outdoors to the grill or batch-cook and microwave portions throughout the week.
  • Utilize Early Mornings – Cool your home with a cross breeze in the early morning hours when temperatures and air pollution levels are low. Remember to close and cover your windows before it heats back up.
  • Help Spare The Air – Certain types of air pollution like smog contribute to rising temperatures. Drive gas-powered vehicles less and take public transit, carpool, or group errands to help prevent further air pollution.
  • Plant a Shade Tree – Not only do shade trees protect your home from the sun’s warming rays, but trees also help produce oxygen and reduce air pollution! Call your local plant nursery to see what fast-growing varieties will thrive in your climate.

We hope these tips help you get started on reducing electricity consumption, lowering your utility bills, and fighting air pollution. Remember that small, simple actions can make a big difference.

The 2025 Spare The Air season continues through October 31. We appreciate your continued efforts.
