Spare The Air Kickoff!

Breathe Easy – Join Us in Kicking Off the Spare The Air Season

The 2025 Spare The Air season begins today! Every May through October, the air districts of the Sacramento region collaborate to inform and engage our communities about air quality, its environmental impact, and how everyone can contribute to cleaner air.

Ground-level ozone (smog) air pollution remains a concern for the Sacramento region. Emissions from gas-powered vehicles, combined with the region’s warm climate and unique geography, are the main contributors to this issue.

It’s important to recognize that high levels of air pollution can lead to serious health impacts, particularly for sensitive groups including children, older adults, pregnant women, outdoor workers, athletes who train vigorously outdoors, and those with respiratory conditions.

What You Can Do

When the Air Quality Index (AQI) for ground-level ozone is forecast to reach 126 or higher, a Spare The Air alert is issued. On these days, everyone is encouraged to take action to reduce air pollution, such as:

  • Driving less
  • Using public transit
  • Carpool
  • Combining errands into fewer trips
  • Telework, if possible

Stay Updated

Find the daily AQI forecast on the Spare The Air website, as well as on our social media platforms – Facebook, and X. Share this information to help others understand the importance of air quality.
