The Benefits of Spare the Air

Breathe Easy – The Many Benefits of Spare The Air

Spare The Air began 30 years ago to help improve air quality in the Sacramento region. Ground-level ozone, also known as smog, is formed when emissions from gas-powered cars combine with the sun’s powerful UV rays. Exposure to smog is unhealthy and can lead to long-lasting negative health impacts, especially for those in sensitive groups.

The simplest way to help Spare The Air is to drive gas-powered cars less. Any reduction in these emissions can lead to better air quality and reduce harmful health impacts. When you Spare The Air and take steps to reduce air pollution, you’re not just improving your health—you’re positively impacting the entire community.

For example:

  • Carpooling reduces the number of cars on the road, which helps reduce traffic and stress.
  • Utilizing public transit can allow you to catch up on your favorite show.
  • Grouping errands into one trip can save time and make you more efficient.
  • Walking, biking, or riding a scooter to work or school can energize you and help you focus on the day ahead.
  • Driving less can help you save money on gas—fuel is expensive.

The 2024 Spare The Air season continues through Oct. 31. Everyone is encouraged to take action and help Spare The Air by driving less, taking public transit, using alternative transportation, carpooling, and grouping errands.
